Sculpture at Falconhurst
‘Are We Sinking?’

We are delighted to announce the arrival of Are We Sinking?, a powerful outdoor Installation by Chilean artist and curator Tere Chad, opening in late March 2026. The work will be on public display at Falconhurst for one year, inviting visitors to pause, reflect and engage with questions of collective uncertainty, vulnerability and resilience.

‘Are We Sinking?’ By Tere Chad

First created in 2020, Are We Sinking? presents a striking and poetic scene: three vultures gaze down upon an origami boat as both birds and vessel appear to submerge into, and emerge from, the ground. Suspended in a moment of stillness, the composition captures a paradoxical pause, where motion is implied but fate remains unresolved. As the birds silently observe, the question lingers in the air: Are We Sinking?

Through this suspended moment, Chad, who is also a trustee from the Royal Society of Sculptors, invites audiences to slow down and reflect alongside the work. The installation mirrors the precarious balance of contemporary life, addressing themes of environmental fragility, collective responsibility and the uncertainty that defines our global present. The use of durable yet evocative materials – metal, paper, wire, fibreglass and jesmonite – reinforces the tension between permanence and impermanence that runs through the piece.

Are We Sinking? has previously been exhibited at the Royal Society of Sculptors, London, as part of Space Lapse: RCA 2020 (June 2021), followed by a major presentation at Gallery No.32, Bexley (February 2022 – May 2023). The work was later selected through a Royal Society of Sculptors award for exhibition at Thirsk Hall Sculpture Garden, North Yorkshire, where it remained on display from May 2023 to March 2025.

Its arrival at Falconhurst marks the next chapter in the life of this acclaimed installation, offering new audiences the opportunity to encounter Chad’s thoughtful and compelling practice within a distinctive outdoor setting. The artist will be offering a series of workshops and guided tours during the period of the exhibition.
